Hello my beautiful brained babies! This week's assignment requires your Think Up! book, which you should have arranged to pick up. Please remember I have a textbook pickup scheduled for Monday, May 4 from 9 am - 12 pm. 
 
5.9i Recognize characteristics and structure of argumentative texts by identifying the claim. 
5.9Eii Recognize characteristics and structure of argumentative texts by explaining how the author has used facts for or against an argument.
 
The pages assigned are pages 41-50. Please ensure you have all strategies needed as well as a thorough explanation on why the answer you have chosen is the answer.

5.2A The student will make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction, as well as provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. 
 
Plot and conflicts are back in business in this unit: Rising action, climax, and falling actions help guide you like a roller coaster through a story this week!
 
1) Review plot (the sum of all events in a story) and conflicts that the characters go through (person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. self). 
2) Please use complete sentences when answering open ended questions AND when providing evidence for your answer choices.

BOOM! POW! WHACK! Onomatopoeia is back! It's time to review poetic sound devices and how they contribute to the author's voice and imagery within poems.

5.8A The student will learn to infer multiple themes within a text and support their inference using text evidence.  
 
Theme was one of the more harder to understand concepts, with most of you missing questions regarding theme. Hopefully by the end of this week, you will have a deeper understanding of theme. 
 
1) Review the different kinds of themes that can relate to MOST stories.

5.3A The student will learn to use print or digital resources to determine word meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, and word origin. 
 
It's time to refresh those dictionary skills and use dictionary entries as well as other context to determine unfamiliar words, how to say them (pronunciation), how many syllables a word has (syllabication), and a variety of helpful skills. 
 
1) Review dictionary entries and re-familiarize yourself on how to use a dictionary. 
2) Please use complete sentences when answering open ended questions AND when providing evidence for your answer choices. 
 
This has a STAAR minitest that will help you build stamina and I encourage you to use strategies that I have implemented to help assist you through it.

5.12B The student will learn to use context to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words. 
 
Since a good majority of you still have a little trouble breaking down important terms, this is a "refresher" course on how to do this. I will be doing my best to upload a video showing how to refine this skill, so please view that video first before doing the assignment so that you can do your best instead of your best guess. 
 
1) Review context clues and the type of clues you usually see within reading passages. 
2) Please use complete sentences when answering open ended questions AND when providing evidence for your answer choices.

5,12A The student will be able to determine the meaning of grade level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes.
 
Part 1 - Spelling worksheet:
This is an interactive way of practicing spelling. You will be able to break down the words by their roots and determine their meaning. 
1) The first page is a word find that has all of the words in the word bank.
2) The second page has the definitions and you will match the word in the word bank with the correct definition. 
 
Part 2- Affixes worksheet:
In the PDF file, the worksheets provided help you to understand how to break down words:
1) into their root (bases)
2) identify the affixes (prefix = beginning, suffix = the end)
