HGA Excels in 2014 TEA Accountability Ratings

Houston Gateway Academy, Inc. (HGA) continues the path of academic excellence with the 2014 accountability ratings released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). HGA exceeded expectations by meeting TEA standards and excelling in all subjects. In 2013-2014, HGA served more than 1,600 students with a student population 99% Hispanic, 93% economically disadvantaged and 40% English Language Learners.

Despite the challenges HGA students and educators face, our Coral Campus received an accountability rating of “Met Standard” with a 6 out of 6 Star Distinction Designation. This rating is the highest possible for the campus and ranks within the top 3% of Southeast Houston and the top 5% of all Texas schools. In addition, the Coral campus was 1 of only 75 schools, of a possible 1,417, in Region IV to receive a perfect rating. Distinction was achieved in Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Closing of Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness. The Elite College Prep Academy–Bowie and Evergreen campuses also received ratings of “Met Standard” and a 5 of 6 Star Distinction Designation which ranked among the highest rated schools in Houston. Distinction was achieved in Reading, Math, Top 25% Student Progress, Closing of Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness.

“We strive to go above and beyond what is required to meet standards set forth by the TEA,” stated Mr. Richard Garza, CEO. “This is the utmost importance to every member of HGA’s staff. The level of dedication of our staff, students, and parents has been reflected in the most recent accountability ratings. Although, we have many challenges that include children who are economically disadvantaged and learning English for the first time, we are not deterred from achieving our goals as a district. We are extremely pleased with our results in 2014 and we are determined to improve even further in 2015.”

Since the new TEA accountability methods were introduced in 2012, all HGA campuses have met the standards set forth. Much of the success of HGA has been attributed to a rigorous curriculum designed specifically to prepare all students for postsecondary education. “The innovative instructional styles utilized in the classroom continue to prove beneficial for every student,” Richard Garza said. “Moving forward, we will continue to look for new ways to enhance the education of our students.”
